Broadspectrum gets Indigenous applicants ‘Work Ready’

Broadspectrum’s Indigenous Employment Parity Initiative (IEPI) team is developing a ‘Work Ready’ program with the Western Sydney Institute of TAFE, Mount Druitt, to drive increased employment opportunities for Indigenous cleaners in Western Sydney.

The course aims to include vocational and work skill modules, and has the additional benefit that it gives participants credits towards having suspended drivers’ licences reinstated. The partnership between TAFE and Broadspectrum could potentially be rolled out across other regions where the company operates facilities maintenance contracts for public schools, namely the Central Coast and Hunter regions of NSW.

Broadspectrum is working with various Job Network providers and Indigenous community organisations to help identify jobseekers interested in this training and jobs pathway.

Recruitment for Broadspectrum’s NSW Schools contract is a fast-paced and challenging environment. Operations Coordinator for NSW Schools, Kayla Baker has been working closely with the IEPI and recruitment team to bring in new staff. Broadspectrum currently delivers services in three regions, including Western Sydney. Kayla said: “I grew up in the Western Suburbs of Sydney, so I know our audience very well. Any opportunity to help Indigenous job seekers is an added motivation.”

The IEPI team runs recruitment information and induction sessions to support the NSW Schools contract. Rose-Marie Blackman, who joined the IEPI team earlier this year as an Administration Trainee, has been actively involved in these sessions. The ‘Work Ready’ program will offer an alternative approach for jobseekers requiring a bit of training before they are ready for employment.
