Broadspectrum’s leaders: Greg Hansen

Celebrating our people

This is an occasional series about Broadspectrum’s leaders. By sharing their stories, it’s an opportunity to celebrate our people, their successes and their diversity. In the words of inaugural interviewee, Karen O’Driscoll, “Our leaders have real lives too, and have had learned through challenges, successes and mistakes that they can share with a wider audience.”

In June, Greg Hansen clocked up 40 years with Broadspectrum. It’s a milestone not many people achieve, and it was marked with the unveiling of “The Greg Hansen BBQ”, complete with a plaque, at our Brisbane office.

“I was pretty chuffed,” Greg said.

On a more serious note, Tim Phelan, Chief Executive – Resources, said, “Greg is a great example of living our company values: integrity, collaboration, ingenuity and innovation. He is the first to raise his hand to help the broader team, from building maintenance to business continuity.

“He has a fantastic work ethic and is an incredibly loyal member of our team.”

As an apprentice boilermaker/welder, in 1979, Greg’s indentures were transferred to General Welding and Construction Co, which was bought by a division of Transfield in 1992. At the time, his role encompassed business development, estimating and project management.

And really, the rest is history.

Greg is an estimator in the Commercial, Estimating and Proposals group based in Brisbane. He has worked in many of our industry sectors: petrochemical, maintenance, facilities management, defence and telecommunications, across Australia and in the Gulf region.

“I enjoy being an estimator because every project and contract is different, each with their own challenges and opportunities,” Greg said.

“Understanding a client’s scope of work, and interpreting exactly what they want, can be a challenge. And tender closing dates often mean too much work in too little time.”

From his trade as a boilermaker/welder, Greg learnt estimating on the job. “There were no formal or registered courses, so I worked alongside experienced estimators and trained on the job.

“It has been a fantastic journey working for Transfield Services and Broadspectrum, because I have gained lots of experience working in the different industry sectors. And I have worked with many good people during my 40-year career.

“I hope the company continues to upskill its employees, as there is benefit to the company and keeping people happy. Additionally, they already understand the business and its systems, processes and requirements.”

A final word on the BBQ. Greg is the master behind the Brisbane office BBQ, which is fired up regularly for monthly staff catch-ups. He’s also the master of his BBQ at home, to the delight of his family and friends.
